Wisdom Journey Day 12

I seek wisdom and advice from others and

therefore I am cautious in choosing wise friends.

I avoid chasing fantasies and keep my eye on the prize,

which is life immortal with God Almighty

Proverbs 12

1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid. 2 A good man obtains favor from the LORD, but the LORD condemns a crafty man. 3 A man cannot be established through wickedness, but the righteous cannot be uprooted. 4 A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones. 5 The plans of the righteous are just, but the advice of the wicked is deceitful. 6 The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them. 7 Wicked men are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the righteous stands firm. 8 A man is praised according to his wisdom, but men with warped minds are despised. 9 Better to be a nobody and yet have a servant than pretend to be somebody and have no food. 10 A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel. 11 He who works his land will have abundant food, but he who chases fantasies lacks judgment. 12 The wicked desire the plunder of evil men, but the root of the righteous flourishes. 13 An evil man is trapped by his sinful talk, but a righteous man escapes trouble. 14 From the fruit of his lips a man is filled with good things as surely as the work of his hands rewards him. 15 The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice. 16 A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult. 17 A truthful witness gives honest testimony, but a false witness tells lies. 18 Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. 19 Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment. 20 There is deceit in the hearts of those who plot evil, but joy for those who promote peace. 21 No harm befalls the righteous, but the wicked have their fill of trouble. 22 The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful. 23 A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself, but the heart of fools blurts out folly. 24 Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in slave labor. 25 An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up. 26 A righteous man is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray. 27 The lazy man does not roast his game, but the diligent man prizes his possessions. 28 In the way of righteousness there is life; along that path is immortality.

I have strived to highlight the positive benefits of following God and choosing His wisdom which leads to so many good thing we all want in our lives. What stands along side each benefit in the proverb is the negative consequence of not following that wisdom.

Each of us has a different personality type. Are you drawn toward the positive or repelled by the negative. Knowing this about yourself is important. What is your personal motivator?

Verse 4 speaks of a wife of noble character. The Message uses these words: A hearty wife invigorates her husband, but a frigid woman is cancer in the bones. That interpretation (I admit) brings thoughts of the bedroom. Both are noble. How much responsibility are we willing to accept on whether our wife is noble in character and responsive to our needs. I don’t think it is all on us but we play a major role and should never underestimate our power in this area. I think it was Coach Bill McCartney of Promise Keepers who said that if a woman was beautiful in her 30s it was her doing, if she was beautiful in her 40s it was her husbands doing. You get the idea.

I seek wisdom and advice from others and

therefore I am cautious in choosing wise friends.

There are Only 3 Things I can Control

Published

on

By

Three things. When you boil it all down there are really only 3 things that each of us controls in life. And that’s only true if you live in the privileged and affluent parts of our world. For some it is only two or one.

Like the primary colors of red, blue and yellow combine to make the whole rainbow it is these primary factors alone that we have the ability to control. All else is a combination of the three.

Your Emotions. To feel is to be human. When a person is unable to feel sorrow, joy or fear there is often a psychological blockage that needs to be worked through. Avoiding situations that touch us in a deep way – like the death of a loved one, the thrill of an adventure or the risk of reaching out in friendship – can limit the depth that we as humans are able to experience life in its fullest.

Controlling our emotions is not about controlling our feelings. It is a matter of controlling how we respond and react to any given situation.

Between action and reaction, cause and effect, there is a moment of time for the human species in which only thought exists. Animals don’t share this opportunity. Their reactions are instinctive, they respond. But for a human, how we respond to a stimuli is always preceded by an opportunity to consider what our response will be.

Do I lash out with angry words when I am cut off in traffic, or consider the possibilities of what the other person may be facing. When the fire alarm goes off do I run for the door or look around and offer assistance. When an offer for intimacy comes do I consider all the repercussions before replying.

It is in that millisecond of time when I insert thought and logic that I become fully aware and fully in control.

Proverbs 31

Sayings of King Lemuel

1 The sayings of King Lemuel–an oracle his mother taught him: 2 “O my son, O son of my womb, O son of my vows, 3 do not spend your strength on women, your vigor on those who ruin kings. 4 “It is not for kings, O Lemuel– not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer, 5 lest they drink and forget what the law decrees, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights. 6 Give beer to those who are perishing, wine to those who are in anguish; 7 let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more. 8 “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. 9 Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

The Wife of Noble Character

10 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. 11 Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. 12 She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. 13 She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. 14 She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. 15 She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls. 16 She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. 17 She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. 18 She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. 19 In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. 20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. 21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. 22 She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple. 23 Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes. 25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. 26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. 27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. 31 Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

The Book of Proverbs ends with a beautiful image of a wife of noble character. It is a praise to the woman in your life, verse 29 is about a specific woman, the woman God gave to you, to love and to cherish, to look past the imperfections and love all that is great about her. This is saved for the final pen stroke in this book of wisdom.

Verse 31 reminds me of Ephesians chapter 5: 25 – 27 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

And just before the wisdom of a noble wife we are told once again of the importance God puts on the rights of the poor and the command He gives us to defend those rights.

Imagine what the world would be like if we all did the “Wisdom of the Proverbs”?

Imagine what your world would be like if you were obedient to God’s wisdom?

Just imagine?

My world is turning right side up as

I experience the love and contentment

that comes by allowing God to reorder my life

according to His Wisdom

and by acting accordingly
